Day 6

14/9/2013

Today saw us finally leave the urban sprawl and strike out into the country. Ali and Pete left Blackburn a little earlier at 0700 hrs. Ben, Rich and Riaz left an hour later.  Guided by Ben and his capable sat nav, the route passed under some dodgy bridges with lots of smashed glass on the ground. This probably contributed to Ben’s three punctures which also earned him IOTD.

Leaving Blackburn the scenery was spectacular as we travelled through the Forest of Boland - where there seemed to be a distinct lack of trees and an abundance of very steep hills! We then crossed over into the lake district where the scenery along Lake Windermere was particularly stunning. The weather was excellent.

On route, we passed the largest independent cycle store in the UK where Pete spent more on cycle kit than Ali did on his bike.

Merv the driver continued the fine work where Nigel left off by making sure that he stopped frequently along the route

Other than Ben’s punctures, the day was relatively uneventful. Pete as usual was being a hero and rescued Ben every time he had a puncture. Ben and Riaz chased some sheep down a mountain and Rich almost fell off his bike which had it happened would have been very funny indeed.

On arriving in Keswick, we were joined by Col Black who drove over from Catterick to join us for dinner. He kindly bought a round of drinks which may have been an attempt to sabotage us for the next morning!

Good to see you tonight guys and to see that spirits are so high-and quite frankly that you are still alive. Good luck for the rest of the journey. I'm sure you'll fly through the remaining miles.

Well done so far boys, i read with delight that the weather is due to be attrocious for the next few days. It's about time this little jaunt of yours became a challenge! I'm sure it will only improve as you get to Scotland!

Ben, i hope you are back on drinking form when you get back, it's getting desperate drinking on my own here.
Rich, i only wish i could be there to see you in full lycra glory every day, mmmmmmmm.....
Riaz, watch those wrists.
Ali, sorry i don't know what to say. Every time i think of you in lycra i feel queasy so i'm going to eject you from my mind and never think of it again.
Pete, i presume once you have finished this warm up cycle you will be swimming or running back to lands end?

Keep it up guys, i'm with you in spirit while sat here drinking weissbier and eating chips. Good luck, simon
